I have only built a couple of models from scratch so far, but there is a lot to be said for softwoods when you are dealing with smaller pieces. I used a combination of interesting looking wood scraps for my first one, but if you are doing much shaping with hand tools or dealing with open grain hard woods, it is a lot more work. Soft woods are great for soaking up adhesives too. Besides wood glue, I use a combination of different ca glues and really like LePages ultra gel because the trigger dispenser makes it very controllable. Also use some fast setting epoxy when attaching small parts that need strength. I have a seven year old grandson so I am always considering that factor.
